The original frozen was a visual masterpiece and pretty groundbreaking in terms of story, Disney-wise. Here we have two powerful sisters who aren't waiting around for a dashing prince to come along and save them. They can save themselves! The first film did a great job of changing the perception of the Disney animated princess and the story was pretty great.
This sequel, however, was a mess. Sure the visuals are simply amazing. In the six years between Frozen and Frozen II, the CGI has really advanced and that's saying alot because, the first one look great and holds up pretty well. In this film we're introduced to more of the kingdom of Arendelle. An enchanted forest, a dark mysterious sea, elemental spirits, massive rock giants, and a conflict between the kingdom and an a tribe of natives. It's a good attempt at world-building and certainly alot of these little details and bits and pieces of backstory and context are interesting but the plot is a convoluted mess. It attempts to throw too much at the viewer in the span of nearly two hours. None of these things were fully fleshed out because the story kept bouncing back and forth from one thing to another and didn't really dedicate any time to appropriately explaining who or what is going on. And so despite the long running time, it felt overall anti-climactic and boring. The main plot, the one directly concerning Elsa and Anna was the weakest of all. It had no real sense of urgency and felt forced and unnecessary.
In regard to the music. Frozen is known for it's memorable catchy songs. Who still doesn't have "Let it go" stuck in their head? Unfortunately, this sequel had way too many musical sequences, too many songs, and not one of them was a memorable, catchy hit on the level of the first film's hit, Let it go. The songs here were used as an attempt to move the plot forward and transition from one scene to the next but they were too much, too long, and too frequent. I found myself groaning every time another musical number started. It really was unnecessary and the songs weren't even that good.
This sequel, to be honest, felt unnecessary. Some Disney films need a sequel like Toy Story, or Cars. Frozen did not need a sequel atleast not a sequel like this one.
